Tom Spaans | Aerodynamics Engineer
Joining Forze Hydrogen Racing gave me the opportunity to put theory obtained during my Aerospace Engineering Bachelor at TU Delft into practice. As the Aerodynamics Engineer of Team XIX, I get to turn the equations and models from lectures into solutions that directly influence how the car handles at high speed.
My role as Aerodynamic Engineer entails overseeing the entire bodywork of the Forze IX. This means shaping every surface of the car to balance aerodynamic efficiency with cooling, packaging, and manufacturability. My work ranges from developing concepts in CFD to translating them into designs that can actually be built and raced. By coordinating with other departments I ensure that the bodywork not only performs aerodynamically but also integrates seamlessly with the car as a whole.
What I find most rewarding is seeing how design changes I make to the bodywork translate into real performance improvements on track. The step from simulation to reality is rarely straightforward, but that challenge is exactly what makes this role so exciting. Each iteration offers the chance to learn and to push the car a little further. Knowing that my work directly shapes the way the Forze IX performs is what drives me every day.
